Hi, Thanks for reading my article on how you can dual boot both Windows Vista and MAC OS X on Your PC.
It took almost what seemed like forever to finally get my main pc to Dual boot properly, After reading lots and lots and lots and lots and (well you get the picture) of “Tutorials †on the same topic, none of them answered any of the questions that i had and what other people had, so after all of this I figured, why not write my own tutorial and help the people like me who had no idea, how to go about it and have their questions answered here…( I hope )
and after all that hassle, I didn’t like it, so I re-formated the hard drive and went with Linux Ubuntu, after seeing this amazing video on youtube, and i love it… im sure I’ll write a guide on this soon as well, so stay tuned.
Please Read this following DISCLAIMER:
If you are one of those freaky people who hate doing experiments with their PC & seeing crashes and Kernel panics etc.. This Tutorial is not for you!! Just Go and buy a New MAC from apple.com
For the rest of you freaky people like me, let’s get this bitch to work…
Note: Most of the steps below are taken from the following sources.
So i would like to thank them for all the effort they have put in & not in any particular order
- uphuck forums
- insanelymac forums
- OSX86 wiki
Things you’re going to need:
- Vista already installed on your primary hard drive.
- iATKOS v1.0 ISO image (Link) Its around 2.06GB in size, or Kalyways 10.5.1 Leopard Dvd
- Windows Vista Boot DVD (just handy in case..)3. Gparted Live cd
- Gparted Live cd
- Linux already installed
- Original MAC OS
- Easy BCD 1.1
- Leopard DVD inside the Drive all the time you run MAC
STEPS: ( Follow these steps in the same order … You Should be Allright ! )
1. If you have already Vista installed on your first partition , then that’s great. If not then do install Vista on the 1st primary partition. I hope every body knows how to install Windows , if you are reading this
2. Now if you have a spare partition on your hard drive where you would like to install MAC OS then go ahead and delete the partition. ! Yes you heard it right. I don’t trust how you made that partition, so unless you made it the right way, lets start from scratch.
3. For those, of you who have read that, MAC OS needs to be installed on a separate disk rather than on a different partition, tell you what, thats all bullshit. You can definitely install MAC OS on the same hard disk as windows and dont need any external or extra hard disk.
Now!!! to create the partition which we will use for MAC OS, do the following.
- A. Right click on “My Computerâ€Â, and click on “Manage†. Under “Disk Managementâ€Â, create a new volume by shrinking any existing unused partition or if you already have a spare partition in either FAT/NTFS then go ahead and delete it, by right clicking on it and selecting “delete partitionâ€Â. This will show the partition as unallocated volume or free space. Both are fine. You need atleast 5GB of space, anything more is also no problem.
Note: Just remember, not to create any file system or anything. just leave it as it is.
- B. Close the management window. Now click on “Start†and then on the “Run†prompt, right click and select “Run as Admin….â€Â.
- C. Type diskpart
- D. Type select disk 0
- E. Type list partition
- F. You should now see all the partitions on your hard disk. Make sure that you could see the partition that you have created just now, by cross checking the size of the disk. The format of the disk should show unallocated . If not then , do the following.
Note: Since proberly all of you are asking your self loads of questions at this part, i would like to point out a bit more information from the above.
If u have created a blank partition from diskmanagment as a simple volume, only then u will see that partition in diskpart. If u have just deleted the partition from disk management and its unallocated/free space then it wont show up as a partition in diskpart. Dont worry if it doesnt show up, just go to step ‘h’ directly. If it does show up then do the below 2 commands and then ‘g’ and then ‘h’. Hope its more clear now
Type select partition x where x is the partition you have just created for mac os
Type Delete partition
Good.. Now We can Continue..
- G. Now again Type list partition. If you see the new partition that you created as unallocated, then we are good
- H. Type the following command create partition primary id=af. If its successful, then it says so at the end Now type select partition x
- I. Type active
- J. Type exit
- K. Close the terminal and restart your computer with the Leopard DVD in your drive.
Note: I’m tottaly assuming that you have downloaded & burnt the iATKOS.iso image on a dvd
4. We are going into the more meatier part now. The real installation of MAC OS. This is where most of the guides fail to point out correctly the steps needed. So here we go. Once you restart the PC with the iATKOS dvd in the drive, you should see a darwin load screen .
5. As the counter starts to count down, press F8.
6. Now type -v and then Press ENTER.
7. After some time, if nothing goes wrong (which will not since you are following my guide) you should see the Leopard installation screen with a red apple . Hold your breath. We are not quite yet there.
8. Press the -> on the screen and wait for some time till the blue/white striped progress bar vanishes from the screen.
9. In the next screen , on the top click Utilities->Disk utility
10. Here select the disk which we have created in windows to use for MAC OS X on left hand side.
Note: Just for my case, windows names partitions form 0,1,2,3 and MAC names them from 1,2,3,… So the partition number in MAC will be 1+ the partition number in windows. So say, you have created partition 3 in windows, here it will be seen as disk0s4.! well it was in my case.
11. Now click on Erase on the right hand side, and under the format options select “MAC OSX Journaled Extended†and click erase. click on the popup to continue. Once the disk is erased and formatted it should be auto mounted. This you can verify by noticing that the partition will be listed active (Dark colored) on the left hand side while rest of the partitions will be Grey colored. If you got till here.. Phew…you are almost there
12. Now close this disk utility and click on Utilities->Darwin_Boot
13. Click on the terminal, to activate the cursor and type Y.
14. When it asks for disk no press 1
15. When it asked for partition no press x+1
Note: x is the partition no in windows and x+1 is that in MAC OS. So if it was Partition 3 in windows and disk0s4 in MAC OS then you should type 4
16. Click Y and Y. If its succesful, you will get a message saying so.. So and so blocks copied blah blah etc. and Process completed at the end.
17. Close this window and then close the terminal.
18. Now once you are back on the iATKOS installation screen. Click Agree and continue.
19. When it asks for partition/disk to install MAC , then our active partition will be the only option we can choose ! . So go ahead and select it and click Ok.
20. Sit back as the installation goes on for some 20-30 mins based on your RAM.
Note: Don’t click on customize and select unnecessary patches, drivers etc, I tried this and didnt work for me. So don’t bother with any of these.! Just the plain install will do. Believe me.
21. Once the installation finishes. Click on Restart with the DVD still inside the drive. Yup you read it write. Dont remove the disk.
22. Once the PC restarts, dont click anything even when you see the boot screen with the timer ticking down. After a while, you should see the grey apple screen and then voila, the beautiful MAC OS startup screen with welcome message. Dont worry if you dont here the sound. Its still pretty big headway .
23. Now that you have satiated your desire, by playing around a bit, in MAC. Restart it. Still with DVD inside the drive
24. This time, after the PC restarts, press F8. Type -s and press ENTER
25. On the command prompt, type fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0
26. Type flag 1
27. Type quit
28. Type reboot
29. Now before the PC restarts, remove the Leopard DVD from the drive.
30. If everything goes fine, then you should be able to login into Windows Vista normally w/o any problem directly as before.
Note: If you are unable to loginto windows, because there is an error which says “winload.exe†correupted.! Don’t panic. Just slip in Windows VISTA boot dvd into the drive and restart. Click on “Repair computer†once you are inside the DVD and it will automatically detect if a problem exists and suggest “Repair and Restartâ€Â. Press the same, and remove the dvd once the PC is about to restart. You should now be able to log in to vista w/o any problem.
31. Once you are inside Vista, put the leopard dvd in the drive. Open the drive from Explorer and copy the “chain0″ file in the Leopard DVD root folder †and copy it in the Windows partition root, i.e, in C:\
32. Remove the Leopard DVD
33. Again, open the “Command prompt†with “Admin†privileges from the Start Menu.
34. Type bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS Xâ€Â
Type bcdedit /enum active
Type bcdedit /set {GUID} PATH \chain0
Note: In the first command type {current} as it is, literally..nothing else..just {current} with the brackets. In the 3rd command however, replace the {GUID} with the alphanumeric GUID you see in the enumerated list under MAC OS X. You can see this list on your terminal as soon as you type the 2nd command above.! As far as i know it is the last entry in the this list. Also it is same as the one that shows up after the 1st command.! Its the one besides IDENTIFIER not the one besides resume object.!
For Ex: bcdedit /set {38912a-233fdf-45ghghhg-fdfe4} PATH \chain0
35. Close the terminal, remove any DVD’s if present in the DVD drive and then restart.
36. Now you should see a boot screen with 2 options, Windows vista and MAC OS X
37. First, Click on windows vista and see if you can log into windows normally. If yes, then great, Restart again.
38. Now select MAC OS X in the menu, you should see the familiar Darwin boot Loading screen with the timer going down. If you dont do anything, then it counts to zero and again shows the menu screen with vista and MAC OS options. dont panic.
39. Again select MAC OS X, and now as the timer counts down, Press F8. You would see a list of partitons on ur disk with their names. Select the partition with MAC OS installed by using up/down arrows and press ENTER.
40. Voila, you did it. ! Vista and MAC OS Leopard on the same PC on different partitions atlast. Hurray. go and have fun.
No more dreaded HFS+ errors and blinking cursor errors or any else. Just plain and simple.!
Enjoy !!!!!!

Thanks..

Hi
Thanks it is a good article
Does it work on VMWARE??
Hi Girish.
you know VMWARE isn’t something I’ve worked with a lot,
so im not to sure, I would imagine the installation process is somewhat similar, just make sure you set up your partitions properly during your setup.
but again, its just all trial & error with these things
good luck, maybe post back with any results you find.
Really great and excellent article! I follow step by step your instructions and at least I got my own hackintosh laptop with Dual boot Vista&Leopard!! Thank you so much for great worth article!
BTW, I got a few error in editing vista boot loader and I use Gparted Live CD for these step. Then I couldn’t login to leopard by looping welcome screen, so I tried to search for fix and finally I got solution from InsanelyMac Forum. Except those bugs, the whole article was insane.
Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH Martin!! :D:D:D
thats fantastic, BlckGeek,
its always good when you get something working after so much frustration..i know from experience that everyone will encounter different troubleshooting when dealing with various laptops etc..but to finaly get it all done is amazing…
now you can go and show it off to all our work mates, showing how tech savvy you are ;)
Could you please stop saying ” insert the vista DVD and repair” ..IT DOES NOT WORK! windows cannot find the partition! you need to re-install the complete OS for crying out loud !
Sorry but I’ve spended hours to make this work with iatkos v4 and ultimate64. no more patience ;)
my 2 cents…
Great stuff, works like a charm now (I had been looking for such soluation for a long time).
Maybe one question though: since the Vista bootmanager is now the default one, is there an option to have the Darwin (when is loaded when selecting “Mac OS x” boot into OSX as in that menu also Vista is listed as the first bootable option?
hi i did all the steps already but after i select Mac Os to boot up, it always go to windows. It never boot to Mac. Could you tell why it does so? And how can i boot to Mac OS.
Hi,
I have original Mac Leopard DVD and i want to know how do i make my pc (with vista) install it without downloading all the patches and othere stuffs….
i look forward for your reply thank you….
@ Girish
A little late now, but I have in the past managed to get OSX running in VmWare, allbeit slow as anything, but i did have it running successfully using an OSx86 install disc from somewhere.
It was quite a while ago so I don’t really remember the steps, but I know that there’s at least one tutorial out there for it (I think in Virtual PC, but easily migratible)
Hi!
My problem is the same like “kyo”…if it possible please share with us what is the problem’s solve!!!
Thanks in advance
Z.
@Zozinnyo & @kyo
the reason it dose this is down to the Boot selection
as you can imagine, this could caused by vista, I would suggest a re-install of OSX, either that, it could end up with a total re-install, of both vista and OSX..
you could try BlckGeeks method & use the Gparted Live CD, to see if this can fix the error..
did you remember to copy over the “chain0″ file to the root of your vista install?
Great tutorial. Leopard works on my HP DV9000 without any problems.
Only strange thing that happend during installation, was that installer hanged somehow in the middle of the process, when I was not touching anything for long time. Within the next try, i was moving the coursor, so everything went fine!
After the darwin screen and -v is entered, it gets stuck at a point where it says Still Waiting for Root Devices, and it keeps repeating this. Just before this is says warning: phy connection failed. status=0×0000000
r u sure we can install Mac properly along with vista with vista already installed…? does it work properly?
Hi,
i tried your steps they are very help but am unable to boot MAC. i got 2 menu option when i select MAC option windows vista is booting not MAC what could be the problem.
I’m a newbee with little knowledge of Windows and PCs. Been on a Mac for 25+ years. I’ve checked out all the forums I can find only to discover there are very few replies to what appear to be reasonable and sane questions. Does anyone know of a decent forum for Hackintosh?
