Steam Valve has revealed the results of its latest PC hardware survey, which polled 1,728,662 Steam users from November 13, 2007 to May 15, 2008.  Among the findings, the company reported that Nvidia cards occupy the top six slots of video hardware among Steam users, with the GeForce 8800 leading at 9.36%.

The most common RAM configuration was 2GB and above. Other interesting results include the ability of 9.57% to utilize DirectX10. Yes, only ~”10%” have DX10, and only “10%” have an 8800GTX…..but this data includes many gamers that would NEVER play a game like Half-life or COD4.

Adventure gamers are now running steam. Sam and Max as well as games like Culpa Innata and Runaway have been added. Puzzle games like Puzzle Quest and the various Pop Cap games are also added, and far cheaper than their website prices on weekend sales / packages.

This means non-action gamers are now part of these surveys. Which means onboard video cards and low end hardware have taken a bit of a leap. While technically this is a more realistic idea of who owns what - it makes the average hardcore gamer appear to be a far smaller number…
